Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to be presented with the Edward R. Roybal Award for
Outstanding Public Service at gathering of Latino leadership next week
WASHINGTON DC - The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund today announced that Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa will be presented with the prestigious Edward R. Roybal Award for Outstanding Public Service at the group's annual Edward R. Roybal Legacy Gala in Washington, D.C. The event will take place on the evening of February 8, 2012, at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium.
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Congresswoman Lucille Roybal-Allard will provide tribute remarks during the event. Gala attendees will also be joined by House Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer, Senator Bob Menendez, Representatives Joe Baca, Francisco Canseco, Donna Christensen, Elijah Cummings, Danny Davis, Bob Filner, Gene Green, Ruben Hinojosa, Sheila Jackson Lee, Grace Napolitano, Jared Polis and Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton.
Each year, Congressman Edward R. Roybal's legacy is celebrated through the recognition of a Latino public servant who has demonstrated exemplary leadership and distinguished himself or herself in public service. Through their respective advocacy and representation, these elected and appointed officials have advanced and given voice to the interests of their constituents and the Latino community.
This year's recipient, Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, has a record of public service that mirrors the life of NALEO's founder Edward R. Roybal, with several shared leadership examples, including the development of initiatives for the benefit and improvement of Los Angeles and its community members, and an unwavering commitment to the City's most vulnerable populations.
